I sensed people were drinking a little more wine than usual but HOW MUCH WINE did we drink? Americans bought 4.25 billion bottles of wine last year (I helped the cause), followed by the French 3.6 billion bottles, and the Italians 3 billion bottles. How much do we know about all that wine we’re drinking? Surely not as much as my guest Jamie Ritchie, head of Sotheby’s global wine business.

Jamie’s out and about telling everybody to get a copy of ‘The New Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia’ Featuring Thousands of Recommendations, Expert Sommelier Tips, and Unique Food Pairings. By the time you finish reading it the pandemic should be over. LOL It’s Huge!

For more than 25 years, The Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia has been a beloved resource for wine aficionados from across the world. This stunning new edition is an oenophile’s dream — and a must-have for anyone looking to become an expert in wine.

This 6th edition, has the latest trends and information on flavor notes, vineyard profiles, tasting room guides, grape know-how and special information on unique varietals. National Geographic Partners sponsored the fascinating wine lovers media fun so Jamie Ritchie could tip us off on what bottles are a good value right now.

PS: Jamie Ritchie is one of the world’s leading wine auctioneers and was one of the auctioneers at each of Sotheby’s 16 consecutive “white glove” wine auctions in Hong Kong from 2009 to 2011, selling 10,202 consecutive lots (without an unsold lot). The Sotheby’s Wine business has sales in excess of $100 million per year. More recently, Ritchie was responsible for launching Sotheby’s Wine, a retail store and online wine business, becoming the only major global auctioneer offering fine wines at retail. Sotheby’s Wine has its flagship headquarters in New York and a second location in its gallery in Hong Kong.

PPS I think he was on ‘wine time” as you’ll hear he showed up a tad later than planned for this ‘live’ interview and I didn’t get the memo because I’m working remote from the studio, and am also on ‘wine time’. Didn’t matter – we had a lovely chat.
