Laiona Michelle is one of the principles in the cast of the big Broadway musical, Amazing Grace. The play charts the life of John Newton, a slaver who finds redemption and turns away from that life to author one of the most beloved and recognized hymns, Amazing Grace. Laiona plays Nanna, a woman taken from her home in Sierra Leone and placed in the service of Mary Catlett, John’s love interest. Laiona has one of the most profound and moving ballads at the end of Act I and sets the course for Act II.
Laiona has also played Dinah Washington, the legendary jazz singer who tried hard to teardown the walls of segregation. And just prior to getting the call to join Amazing Grace, she had been out on the road with The Book of Mormon.
