Would it surprise anyone to know that The Equal Rights Amendment has never actually passed and is STILL NOT INCLUDED in the Constitution? Wow Surprised me! In July Oscar Winner Meryl Streep sent a packet to every single member of Congress, including a letter and a copy of ‘Equal means Equal’, a book by Jessica Neuwirth, President of the ERA Coalition. Jessica Neuwirth joins us on the air today to explain what the heck is going on.
Basically – Although Congress passed the Equal Rights Amendment in 1972, it did not garner enough support from individual states to be added to the Constitution. In in the decades since, the proposed amendment has fallen to the political wayside.
Without an Equal Rights Amendment, women do not have effective legal recourse when discriminated against simple because they were born female.
“Certainly the Constitution does not require discrimination on the basis of sex. The only issue is whether it prohibits it. It doesn’t.
