Small Businesses Are Crying HELP. ‘Macan-Deve’ an Engineering Architectural & Construction Management Firm in White Plains, NY is one of them. CEO Donna Hager presented her dire situation during Goldman Sachs recent first 10,000 Small Businesses Virtual Capitol Hill Week. Donna was one of the 2,000 #10KSmallBiz alums who joined over 400 meetings with congressional representatives. Each company wrote a letter to their Congressperson. Excerpts from Donna’s letter included she’s homeschooling two 3rd graders while running a business that provides Architecture + Engineering Services to support MAJOR public infrastructure projects in the NY Metro area like the JACOB JAVITS Center Expansion Project. Macan-Deve is a certified WBE and a Section 3 Business Concern, which means that 30% of their workforce are low-income housing residents, seeking careers in Construction Management. Macan-Deve had a 147% increase in sales in 2019 and 2020 was looking even brighter. Donna initially kept all her employees on payroll through Retained Earnings, PPP funding, and EIDL but she’s having to lay people off. She asked…”Representative Lowey, My question today is….. How can we, as the small business community, help Congress secure the federal funding needed to keep Government infrastructure projects alive in NY State so we can survive, continue to work …back up at 100% capacity, get paid, and create more jobs….especially for low-income housing residents as a S3BC?”

PS I was inspired to do this show topic after reading about another struggling small business owner I know who also gave a ‘virtual speech’ to Capitol Hill. Lynne Lambert is a WBE with two brands severely impacted by Covid. NYC Subway Line – a 25 year old business which makes apparel and accessories under license from the MTA and Map’t Gear – which she developed in the Goldman Sachs program, a Custom Map SWAG for conferences and meetings – all of which have gone virtual now if they are happening at all.
