Polo Anyone? Greenwich Polo is Happening and you should go! Today meet Mariano Aguerre (ah-geer-ree). He is arguably one of the best polo players the sport has ever seen! Plus he’s got a great personality and a wonderful story. His Team: White Birch
His Home Country: Argentina
Mariano Aguerre is a 9-goaler ( he was ranked as a 10-goaler at one time and less than 100 players in the world have reached that distinction). He has racked up a list of impressive victories throughout his career. Mariano’s international career as a professional polo player started when he won the USPA Gold Cup with White Birch in 1987. Since then, Mariano has gone on to win almost every high-goal polo trophy including the Argentine Open (nine times), the Hurlingham Open (five times), the C.V. Whitney Cup (six times) U.S. Gold Cup (8 times) and a host of other titles. Most recently in April 2014, Mariano won the U.S. Open (2nd time) title with team Alegria.
Mariano was trained by his father-in-law and polo veteran Gonzalo Pieres, Sr. Mariano is known for his intelligence on the field and unique playing style. In addition to playing polo, Mariano is a breeder of polo ponies (Los Machitos farm in Argentina).

One of the big tournaments that will be played this year at Greenwich Polo Club is the East Coast Open. Sanctioned by the USPA, the National Governing Body of the sport of polo, the 2015 East Coast Open will be held at Greenwich Polo Club. The public matches will take place over three consecutive Sundays in Greenwich, CT and in close proximity to New York City where the first polo match was played in the United States more than 125 years ago. The 20-goal tournament will commence on Sunday, August 23, 2015, continue on Sunday, August 30, 2015 and conclude with the Championship Match on Sunday, September 6, 2015. The USPA will live stream the Semi-Finals on ChukkerTV, and NBC Sports Network will air a 60-minute National broadcast of the East Coast Open Final on September 13, 2015. The growth in the popularity of polo has grown consistently in the past two years, which is reflected in a nearly 20% increase in viewership since its first broadcast on NBC SN in 2013.
