What the World Needs Now Is More ‘Fettuccine Alfredo’! The dish that’s been bringing people together for 100 Years! Here’s the back story. Alfredo di Lelio opened Alfredo di Roma Restaurant in 1914 in Rome. Alfredo’s wife was pregnant and having trouble eating. Desperate to solve her dilemma, he tried and tried until he came up with a dish that she loved that got her eating again. ‘Fettuccine Alfredo’ was born! I was reminded how much I love Fettuccine Alfredo at a recent business lunch with gal pal Vikki Ziegler and her business associate Stuart at ‘Alfredo 100’ in NYC ( yes the NYC home of the original ‘Fettucini Alfredo’) I was presented with ‘The Golden Spoon’ but had no idea why. Russell Bellanca The President of Alfredo Int. Inc., and Co-Owner, Alfredo 100 came over to explain and I loved the story so much I invited him to be on the show Today at 10:20am eastern.
“Alfredo100′ is located at 7 East 54th Street in NYC
Russell Bellanca is an experienced restaurateur with Italian origins who relocated his critically acclaimed Alfredo of Rome, previously in Rock Center, to a new prominent location previously occupied by Bice on 54th St NYC. , Bellanca followed in his father’s footsteps and took over the two restaurants Guido Bellanca had previously opened, Alfredo’s in New York City (1985) and Alfredo’s at Disney World’s EPCOT (1995). Under his management, both locations flourished and received numerous accolades, from inclusion in various restaurant guides and websites to being considered one of the most successful restaurants at EPCOT. In 2001, Bellanca opened Alfredo of Rome in Rockefeller Center, receiving a multitude of high ratings from New York Magazine to the Michelin and Zagat guides.
As the President of Alfredo International and with over 35 years of experience in the restaurant industry, his latest venture, with partner Ilaria Coletto, was the relocation and transformation of Alfredo of Rome to Alfredo 100 in 2014, honoring the 100-year anniversary of the original Roman location.
The Back Story of The Golden Spoon:
Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, major stars of silent films, visited Alfredo’s for the first time while in Rome on their honeymoon in 1927. The food was soooo unbelievable they went back every day for a week! LOL Before returning to Hollywood, the couple presented Alfredo with a solid gold serving spoon and fork. The gift was inscribed ? “To Alfredo, The King of Pasta.”
The spoon and fork became the family “symbol of excellence.” They are proudly displayed today in Alfredo’s in Rome when serving “Fettuccine Alfredo”, the house specialty .
In NYC at Alfredo100 ,whoever is the Special Guest at the table when Fettucini Alfredo is ordered is presented with The Golden Spoon!
That’s my spoon shot below. Thanks Vikki Ziegler !
