Before his brother Frank wrote Angela’s Ashes, Malachy was the famous McCourt. While Frank struggled in obscurity as a New York City public school teacher, Malachy was a bon vivant actor, talk show host, bar owner, raconteur, gold smuggler, candidate for governor, and regular on the Tonight Show.
Malachy is the last of Angela’s children, the others long dead and gone. That, and given that he is Irish, make Frank’s younger brother a bit of an expert on death. His latest book, ‘DEATH NEED NOT BE FATAL ‘ is a bit about the rituals of death (why do cars in a funeral cortege keep their lights on? what is the origin of the Irish wake?), but it is also about laughter and tears, brotherhood, poverty, history, the famous (Bill Clinton! John Wayne! Kirk Douglas!) and infamous, about shame and guilt, and about living life to the fullest. Malachy joins the show at 10:21 eastern today.
