Now THIS is a great man! Gary Player, one of the greatest players in the history of golf spoke last night at the Met Golf Writers annual dinner in Tarrytown, NY. He really had a message to the world which we will recap on the air today. And then the story of Nick Price who changed the dynamic of the phrase ‘the agony of defeat’ with his pure class on the days it did not go so good. Invited by my pal Bruce Smith who puts on this annual biggest golf dinner in the country, and hosted by old pal & new MGW President Bruce Beck of NBC Sports – I got a kick out of ending up sitting next to another dear pal Howie Schwartz one of NYC’s best known recording studio honchos who joins me on the air today to discuss how being ‘gritty’ is key to success in any area of life!

BTW Gary Player was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was only 8 when his mother died from cancer. He told of walking an hour and half every day to school and coming home to a dark house & learning to cook & clean while his Dad was at work in the gold mines. His father took a loan for his first set of clubs. At the age of 14, Player played his first round of golf and parred the first three holes. At age 16, he announced that he would become number one in the world and make sure no other kids had a hard time growing up. DONE. He told of his friendship with Nelson Mandela and what they did together to raise $ for the less fortunate. He spoke of the power of a great wife behind a great man.
Gary Player operates The Player Foundation, which has a primary objective of promoting underprivileged education around the world. In 1983, The Player Foundation established the Blair Atholl Schools in Johannesburg, South Africa, which has educational facilities for more than 500 students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Foundation has raised over 60 million dollars.
