Your Dearly Departed May Not Leave So Fast and “Business is Dead” could take on a whole new meaning for some in the funeral industry in NY because of allegations of a funeral exam cheating scandal involving ‘the Harvard of Mortuary Schools’. According to Sunday’s NY Post article by Susan Edelman, The American Academy McAllister Institute mortuary school has been rocked with allegations of trying to give their students an unfair advantage on the national board exam they took back in 2013 by sending them the questions in advance. The state Bureau of Funeral Directors has now notified 94 NY Morticians that they must retake and pass the exam they took back then by June 30th or apply for an extension in order to keep their funeral director licenses. There’s already a limited number of funeral directors and the industry and the industry is already short-staffed by 30%. Many have been in the funeral business for years and now fear losing their livelihoods. AAMI takes 18 months and costs $4000-$5000,. Grads must complete the exam a 12 month apprenticeship and a state test on funeral law.

The mortician school cheating scandal that could ruin city funeral homes

I asked Jen Graziano my Funeral Director gal pal to weigh in today on the funeral test cheating scandal that threatens to cripple NYC Funeral Homes. (See earlier post). Jen is a wonderful caring professional in the business and has helped carry her family’s funeral home legacy into the 4th generation. (Coxe and Graziano Funeral Home).Jen has embraced the call to service and has taken her work outside the confines of the funeral home into the community at large. A lawyer, trailblazer and Mom as well, Jen is just launching a new magazine focused on health, wellness and resources called ‘Coming of Age’ to provide answers and solutions to the issues people face as they ‘come of age” . Brilliant! Tune in 10:20am eastern today.
